
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18, 2000) is an American actress and singer who spanned over 40 years. London was a torch performer, known for her smooth, soft voice. She recorded over 30 albums of jazz and pop standards from 1955 to 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her recording of "Cry Me a River", a track that she had introduced to her debut album. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her character in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse on Emergency! Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's long and successful acting career started in 1944 when she was cast in movies. This included roles as the lead female role in numerous westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. She released her final studio album in 1969 but achieved continuing success playing the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) She was married to her husband Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
